HARRIET TUBMAN SCULPTURE & PARK

Organization: United South End Settlements
Location: 450 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA 02118
Grant Date: 1998

The Henderson Foundation provided support for ornamental fencing in Harriet Tubman Square and fabrication of “Step on Board,” depicting Harriet Tubman, by artist Fern Cunningham. The fencing frames a second sculpture on the site, the 1913 “Emancipation” by artist Meta Vaux Warick Fuller.

“Step on Board” was the first statue on city-owned property honoring a woman. It pays lasting tribute to Harriet Tubman and her role as a ‘conductor’ in the Underground Railroad.
